What I Learned as a Research Fellow at the University of Arizona
From Tirana to Tucson
In September 2022, I arrived in Tucson, Arizona, as a Research Fellow at the University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI). This six-month fellowship, made possible through the CIEE program and the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF), was one of the most transformative experiences of my professional life.
What UACI Taught Me
The University of Arizona doesn't just conduct research — it builds ecosystems. UACI sits at the nexus of the university, the business community, and the broader Tucson region. Its mission is to transform research into impact, and it does this through:
- Incubation programs that help researchers become entrepreneurs
- Networking events that connect academics with investors and industry
- Mentorship structures that bridge generational and sectoral divides
- A culture of openness where failure is treated as a learning opportunity, not a stigma
Lessons for Albania
What struck me most was the intentionality of it all. Innovation ecosystems don't happen by accident. They require infrastructure, investment, and most importantly, people who are willing to connect dots.
Albania has many of the raw ingredients: talented people, interesting challenges, growing international connections. What we need more of is the connective tissue — the knowledge brokers, the facilitators, the institutions that help good ideas reach the people who can implement them.
The Boulder Trip
One highlight was a week-long enrichment trip to Boulder, Colorado, with other international fellows. Seeing another model of innovation — smaller, community-driven, deeply connected to its local culture — reinforced my belief that there's no single template for success. Each community needs to find its own path.
Coming Home
I returned to Albania with a clearer vision of what knowledge-based development looks like in practice. My work since then — in teaching, consulting, and community building — has been deeply shaped by those six months in the American Southwest.
I'm grateful to CIEE, AADF, and the UACI team for this opportunity. If you're an Albanian professional considering an international fellowship, I encourage you to apply — the perspective it gives you is invaluable.
